When Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

January 28, 2023 11:55 pm

Wisdom tooth removal is one of the most common types of oral surgery. Some patients have impacted wisdom teeth, crowding, or need to have their wisdom teeth removed to prevent infections or cysts from developing. In other cases, patients don’t need to have any wisdom teeth removed at all because they either don’t have any, or their wisdom teeth grew in correctly with plenty of room in their mouth.

How to Know You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Visiting your dentist on a regular basis for routine cleanings and checkups is the best way to identify the ideal time to schedule a wisdom tooth extraction, should you or your child need one.

At The Smile Club Dentistry and Orthodontics, our team will take routine dental X-rays and observe the development of your wisdom teeth. We will let you know if and when we think you should schedule removal of your wisdom teeth.

If you feel pain toward the back of your mouth or feel like your wisdom teeth are beginning to grow in, you are welcome to get in touch with our office so we can take a closer look!

The best age to get your wisdom teeth removed

The ideal age for wisdom tooth removal is when a patient is in their late teens or early twenties. This is because we want to wait until the jaw is done developing but the process is simpler if the teeth don’t have a lot of time to create complex root systems that can make the procedure more complicated and the recovery more intense.

While the ideal age for wisdom teeth removal is usually between 17 and 26, every patient is unique. Your oral health journey may not look the same as your friends and family members. Sometimes wisdom tooth extractions are best pushed back due to orthodontic treatment or time-sensitive restorative treatments that need to be taken care of first.
