Am I Too Old for Adult Braces?

March 29, 2023 6:42 pm

Adolescence is when many patients first get orthodontic care, but it’s not the only time that you can straighten your smile! While orthodontic treatment isn’t generally considered until age 7, there’s no upper age limit for getting braces.

When you’re younger, it may be easier to move your teeth because parts of the mouth are still developing and the bone tissue is less dense. That being said, moving teeth is entirely possible for adult patients! This is true even if you’ve had braces once before when you were younger and your teeth have since shifted. We just need to exert the optimal amount of force in the right direction using an appropriate treatment method.

Requirements for Orthodontic Care

While youth isn’t a requirement for getting braces, there are some things that need to be true to qualify for orthodontic care. First, dental work that your smile needs must happen first so that you’re starting with a healthy foundation. This includes getting any cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer treated. Your jawbone also needs to be in good health so that your teeth can be shifted safely.

Consult with Our Dental Team!

The best way to figure out if adult braces are a good option for you is to see a dentist or orthodontist. Every orthodontic case is unique in terms of how the teeth are currently positioned and how much they need to be shifted to become aligned. By visiting a dental professional in person, they can give you an accurate assessment about your options and how long you can expect treatment to take.
