How to Clean Clear Aligners
February 26, 2022 12:32 amInvisalign® is a popular alternative to traditional braces for clear aligners’ discreet appearance and removability. They should be worn about 20-22 hours a day, removing them for eating and daily cleaning. Follow these tips to keep your aligners clean:
- Use the Correct Cleaner
- Soak Your Aligners
- Keep Your Teeth Clean
Did you know clear aligners can become damaged if toothpaste is used to clean them? Toothpaste can scratch the aligners because it is too abrasive. Instead, use a clear aligner cleaner or liquid soap to clean off food debris and bacteria from the crevices of your aligners.
In addition to cleaning your aligners with clear liquid soap, soak your aligners frequently to remove any built-up plaque or odor that may be attached. To soak your aligners, use a solution like Invisalign crystals, denture cleaner, or retainer cleaner and let them sit for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool to lukewarm water.
Daily brush and floss your teeth to maintain healthy teeth and gums, as well as clean aligners. After eating and before putting your aligners back in, brush and floss your teeth and use a soft-bristled toothbrush (that is separate from the one you use to brush your teeth) to clean your aligners. Doing so will prevent food particles and bacteria from sitting against your teeth when you put your trays on. Otherwise, you could cause your aligners to become discolored and increase your risk of tooth decay.
