Common Causes of Bad Breath

Bad breath is always an unwelcome visitor. Aside from being a personal nuisance, it can actually affect your relationships with others and the confidence you have going out into the world. To treat bad breath, you need to figure out what’s causing it. In fact, there are many different conditions that can lead to a foul mouth odor. These are some of the most common.

Poor Dental Hygiene

When food gets stuck in or around our teeth and bacteria forms, it can bring on an unpleasant stench. It’s important to maintain a proper dental routine to remove bacteria and food particles. Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time and floss every day. Bacteria is also found on your tongue and on your dental appliances, like dentures and clear aligners, so make sure those stay clean too.

Certain Foods

There are some pungent foods that are more likely to cause bad breath, including garlic, onions, fish, and horseradish. To help prevent the smell from sticking around, brush your teeth after eating or at least rinse your mouth with water and pop in a stick of sugar-free gum.

Some Medications

Some prescription medications cause dry mouth. In turn, that dry mouth can lead to bad breath. This is because there’s not enough saliva production to wash away the odor-causing bacteria. Before you make any changes in your medication, however, make sure to speak with your doctor.
