What Age Should Kids Start Receiving Dental Checkups?

While children typically start losing their baby teeth and getting their first permanent teeth around age six, their first dental checkup should happen much earlier.

A Child’s First Dental Checkup

Kids should see the dentist soon after their first tooth erupts or around their first birthday. Even if your child hasn’t gotten their first tooth by age 1, you should still take them for their first checkup. If needed, your child will receive a gentle cleaning. Additionally, the dentist will examine your child’s bite, jaw, gums, and teeth development, and answer any dental-related questions you may have.

How Often Should a Child Visit the Dentist?

Kids should visit the dentist every six months just like adults. Depending on their oral health and risk for dental disease, they may need to visit more often. Routine cleanings typically take between 30 minutes to 1 hour. The hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your child’s teeth, polish their teeth, and floss between their gums. Their dentist will then check for cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.

Why Going to the Dentist Matters for Kids

Despite being temporary teeth, maintaining healthy baby teeth is beneficial for your child. For example, baby teeth help your child learn to speak and eat with confidence. If baby teeth are lost before they’re ready, it can disrupt the alignment of their underlying adult teeth and contribute to speech impediments or malnutrition. Keeping up with dental visits can decrease your child’s anxiety about cleanings and other treatments so they feel more comfortable at the dentist.
